Device Drivers to Add to WIM Image(s) identifies the device drivers to incorporate in the Windows Server 2008 (SP2 or R2) WIM image(s). Note, the boot WIM image identified in the table is only required for Windows Server 2008 SP2 installations, and the install WIM image identified in the table is required for both Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 installations.

Note that for Windows Server 2008 WDS installation environments, a device driver repository is provided, which you can modify. For Windows Server 2003 SP2 WDS installation environments, a device driver repository is not provided and you must manually create one. The following is an example of how you might want to set up the directory structure for a new device driver repository:

If you do not have a copy of the Tools and Drivers DVD, you can download the ISO image for the Tools and Driver DVD. For details, see Appendix D, Downloading the ISO Image for the Tools and Drivers DVD.

For Windows Server 2008 SP2 (only) installations, add the required boot device drivers described in Device Drivers to Add to WIM Image(s) to boot.wim. For details about adding the device drivers to the boot.wim, see Add Device Driver(s) to Boot WIM - Windows Server 2008 SP2 Only .

If you have a flash media reader or any removable media, try to eject the removable media. Then, reassign the drive letters in such a manner that you leave a lower drive letter available to mount the ISO image. The file might not behave correctly if it has an assigned drive that follows other drives.

After you eject the ISO drive F, reassign the USB drive to drive F. Now when you mount the ISO image, it will be auto assigned to drive E without generating any errors. The new layout will be as follows.

This blog post provides guidance about using AWS Systems Manager to automate the upgrade of your Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2 end of support instances on AWS. The guidance helps you move these to newer supported versions using a low-risk approach.

These automation documents provide two upgrade paths. One helps you upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 to Windows Server 2012 R2. The other helps you upgrade SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 4 or SQL Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 3 on Windows Server 2012 R2 to SQL Server 2016. We describe these following.

For further details on the upgrade from SQL Server 2008 with Service Pack 4 and SQL Server 2008 R2 with Service Pack 3 on Windows Server 2012 R2 to SQL Server 2016, see the AWSEC2-CloneInstanceAndUpgradeSQLServer page in the System Manager documentation.

This script creates an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from a Windows Server 2008 R2 instance in your account, and then upgrade the AMI to Windows Server 2012 R2. The upgrade operation is a multistep process that can take two hours to complete. The automation creates an AMI from the instance and then launches the newly created AMI in the VPC and subnet you provide. The automation workflow performs an in-place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 instance to SQL Server 2016. The workflow also updates or installs the AWS drivers required by the upgraded instance. After the upgrade, the workflow creates a new AMI and then terminates the upgraded instance.

This script creates an AMI from Amazon EC2 Windows instance running SQL Server 2008 on SP4 or SQL Server 2008 R2 on SP3 in your account, and then upgrades the AMI to SQL Server 2016 SP2. The upgrade is a multistep process that can take two hours to complete. The automation creates the AMI from the instance, and then launches the new AMI in the subnet that you provide. The automation then performs an in-place upgrade of SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2016. After the upgrade, the automation creates a new AMI before terminating the upgraded instance.

For the purposes of this example, I have a Window 2008 R2 instance residing in my AWS account. The image following shows my instance as having SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 installed also, with a sample database of AdventureWorks. On the completion of this automation, AWS Systems Manager upgrades the OS to Server 2012 R2. SQL Server 2008 R2 will remain as is.

In this blog post, we use two AWS Systems Manager documents, AWSEC2-CloneInstanceAndUpgradeWindows and AWSEC2 -CloneInstanceAndUpgradeSQLServer, to help you automate the upgrade process for your fleet of Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 with SP4 or SQL Server 2008 R2 instances in your AWS environments. When the automation steps are complete, an AWS AMI is created. This approach gives you flexibility on how you can move forward with your upgraded servers.

This paper provides detailed instructions for creating Automated System Recovery (ASR) based recovery media for the Microsoft Windows Server 2012, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft Windows 8 and Microsoft Windows 8.1 operating systems, and using it to perform a full system recovery ("bare metal restore"). See Best Practices for Recovering Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, and Windows Vista for using ASR to recover Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, Windows 7, or Windows Vista.

ASR is a feature of Microsoft Windows for backing up a system's disk and volume configuration, and restoring it during a bare metal restore operation. ASR has been a feature of Microsoft Windows operating systems since Windows XP. Beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, Microsoft integrated ASR with Microsoft Volume Shadowcopy Service (VSS). ASR support for these operating systems was introduced in Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Backup-Archive client version 6.2.2, at which time ASR was added to the Backup-Archive client's system state backup and restore capabilities. Support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 was introduced in Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Backup-Archive Client version 6.4.0. Support for Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1 was introduced in Tivoli Storage Manager for Windows Backup-Archive Client version 6.4.2.

An alternative method for full recovery of Windows systems using Tivoli Storage Manager is described in another paper, Modified Instructions for Complete Restores of Windows Systems with the TSM Client: Bare Metal Restore (BMR), System State Restore, Windows System Object Restore. This method works well for Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Windows 2003 R2. However, the complexities of restoring later Windows operating systems stretch that method to its limits. Further, Microsoft disclaims support for "online system state restore", which is the basis of that method. Therefore, with one exception, ASR is the recommended "best practice" for performing bare metal restores of Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, and later Windows operating systems.

Tip: Instead of using the steps below, use the steps in Creating Bootable WinPE Media for Recovery of Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and Microsoft Windows 10. Despite the title of the article, the resulting WinPE ISO image can be used for recovering Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1; the same ISO image can be used for UEFI or BIOS firmware; and the procedure includes a downloadable script that automates the ISO image build process. 2ff7e9595c
